Today I felt inspired to address a very difficult Truth. It is summed up through an African Proverb that says, “If there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm.” If it is your first time reading those words it will undoubtedly resonate on a certain level. But it is one thing for words to hit home; it is completely different for us to truly apply that perspective on a consistent basis. “If there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm.” This Truth may hurt a bit (actually, it will really freaking hurt)—but the liberation and empowerment that come with it should far outweigh the brutal honesty. ANY enemies we encounter in life only affect us if they are able to find something within us that agrees or allows them to enter. Those harsh words, that evil deed that so deeply hurts us, does so because of the demon inside of us that is being ignited—the internal enemy that is attacking us from the inside out.
Our first instinct when thinking about this concept will most likely be to get defensive. Here was my initial reaction: “That’s not true, I don’t agree with some things that have still hurt me.” Eventually, I took a step back and realized that the “pain” we feel from our enemies is a manifestation of OUR OWN INSECURITY. When we are secure in our identity as a player, as a person, no words or actions from anyone or anything outside of us has any impact on who we are. Furthermore, anyone who chooses to subscribe to the side of our enemies is not worth trying to prove ourselves to. In fact, any desire to prove ourselves or to combat any enemy is also a manifestation of us grappling with the demons within. The ONLY person who needs to know who you really are is YOU. That is our armor. While others may have a lot to say about you—especially in sports—the only way they can tell you or anyone else your WORTH is if you MAKE their statements true. Good, bad, or indifferent, the opinions and actions from others that impact us are the ones which we ALLOW to do so by behaving in a way that grants our enemies the victory.
The POWER is OURS. Whether someone says you are terrible or you are great, whichever external force you CHOOSE to align yourself with will become YOUR Truth. Now let me be clear, I am aware of this principle and still need to be better at practicing it. I still get pissed, I am not going to sit here and claim that just because I find truth in this perspective that I am perfect in applying it; however, I will say that when I can remember to follow this line of reasoning I find it incredibly liberating and powerful. My IDENTITY and WORTH are MINE and it is entirely up to me to decide which outside forces will be a part of them. Everything else is merely white noise beyond the walls. The enemy works in pairs, and the one outside the gates can only win if the accomplice opens them. “If there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm.” ELIMINATE THE ENEMY WITHIN.
